Fossil of "Lucy's Baby" Revealed

Thursday September 21, 2006
Five years after the fossil was found in the Dikika region of Ethiopia, a juvenile Australopithecus afarensis has been finally freed from the sandstone surrounding it, reports BBC News. As it's the same species as the adult fossil found in 1974 that became known as "Lucy", it's inevitable that this fossil is being nicknamed "Lucy's Baby". Dig leader, Zeresenay Alemseged of the Max Planck Institute, is quoted as saying that this fossil find "puts afarensis in a special position to play a pivotal role in the story of what we are and where we come from."
