West African Mask Auctioned For Record Price

A West African Fang mask said to have inspired none less than Picasso has been sold at auction in Paris for four times its estimated price, according to Art Info. The 19th-century Fan mask was sold for more than $7.5 million, a record for what is classified as "primitive art" in art circles. Whether this is a sign that African art is being recognised as world class and worth investing in or whether this mask's value is derived solely from its Picasso connection is an issue that would take lengthy debate.
