The Latest Defence Against Aids: Lime Juice
Monday June 5, 2006
If concentrated enough, lime and lemon juice kill the HIV virus and therefore "could be potent weapons in the fight against Aids in the developing world", according to a report on National Geographic. It quotes a reproductive biologist at Australia's University of Melbourne, Roger Short, as saying "in the supermarkets of Cape Town you [can] get five large lemons for the price of one condom". The 24.5 million people living with HIV in sub-Saharan Africa (source: UN Aids 2006 report) are evidence that existing Aids campaigns aren't working. But it's hard to believe that a man who's not willing to wear a condom could be persuaded apply concentrated lime juice!Image © UNAIDS/G. Pirozzi
