Dafur: It's Not Genocide

Dafur, IRIN "Genocide is not being committed in Darfur" according to an opinion piece in the Los Angeles Times by Michael Clough, ex-director of the Africa program of the Council on Foreign Relations in the USA. In a thoughtful piece on the responses by various nations to the events in Dafur, he says: "Of the many tragedies of Darfur, one is that it had to be mislabeled a genocide before politicians and activists were stirred to respond." In the world of conflict resolution, the attempt to displace, erase or kill whole groups of race or ethnicity qualifies as genocide. I think the Arab militia attempts to killand displace village after village of black people definitely qualifies. Call it what it is, even if it ain’t pretty.
