Archbishop Tutu Criticises Black Economic Empowerment in South Africa
Thursday November 25, 2004
Archbishop Desmond Tutu strongly criticised South Africa's black economic empowerment when he gave this year's Nelson Mandela Lecture saying it enriched only a small elite not the vast majority, as well as criticising the government housing schemes as "the next generation of slums" and the lack of freedom of speech when it came to questioning government's policies. He also suggested that people should adopt a poor family to aid financially or help pay school fees. Read the BBC News and the News 24 reports on Tutu's speech, plus the government's reponse as reported on News 24.
