Continuing talks in Burundi?

Thursday July 29, 2004
According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs some progress is being made in Burundi. The country, which is beset with the same ethnic unrest as Rwanda (between Hutu and Tutsi), is currently undergoing negotiations for a new constitution throughthe mediation of South Africa's Deputy President Jacob Zuma. The five main Tutsi parties have rejected the current version of an agreement claiming it is biased towards the Hutu and that Zuma has ignored their attempts to negotiate (Zuma refused to meet with the parties separately after they walked out of a joint meeting with Zuma and the various Hutu representatives). Zuma, however, stated at a news conference on Tuesday that "all the parties now largely agree to the Pretoria accord."
